Why is it important to plan your outfits for the photo session.
If you’ve booked a photo session with me in the past you probably remember how much I stressed an importance of choosing your outfits well for the shoot. When thinking about preparing to your photoshoot, consider picking right clothes your most important task! To put is simply well selected clothing is just as important as your photographer’s skills! Because it can hamper all your photographer’s efforts and spoil even most beautiful photos you could otherwise cherish and display.
When booking a photo session what you do is you essentially make a lifelong investment for your family. The photos captured during your photshoot will for many years remind you of this very special moment in time. Of yourself and your family, your connection and who you all were as individuals. These photos will then be passed on to generations that will come after you. When you think of it this way, making sure you’re well prepared for the shoot gains a whole new layer of meaning.
So what should you wear for your photo shoot?
There are a few dos and don’ts that will guide you through the process of preparation:
Firstly, make sure your colour palette revolves around earthy tones. Grey, brown, green, and for more distinct colours reach for burgundy or mustard yellow. Pick colours that offer a reflection of your personality, something that compliments your beauty but won’t stand out too much stealing all focus from the main subject, and that’s you and your family.
Secondly, make sure to wear clothes made of natural fibres. Best fabrics are cotton (including denim) and linen, as these create a wonderful composition with surrounding nature in outdoor sessions and don’t interfere with studio lighting adding unnecessary glare.
If you’re preparing to a maternity session it’s also very important to pay particular attention to your underwear. It’s crucial to wear underwear that won’t leave deep marks on your skin and won’t stand out worn under semi sheer maternity gowns. I always advise to bring an extra set of underwear or two, just to make sure we can match the colours well to create perfect compositions for the shoot. There’s plenty of space to get changed comfortably at the studio.
What to avoid?
I will list the most important pieces of clothing to avoid. This should give you a rough idea what to steer away from:
- black and white clothes
- vibrant colours such as strong red, orange, neon green or yellow etc,
- sheer clothes
- overly patterned clothes (i.e. stripy, zig zag patterned etc)
- joggers, trainers and sports wear in general
These can easily spoil an excellent photograph, and even with best intentions in mind and most impressive retouching skills, your photographer will not be able to save these photos for you.
If you’re not sure whether your wardrobe can provide an ideal selection for your photo shoot, you might wish to consider making a small investment for the purpose. You don’t have to shop for designers clothes and some of my best finds were actually sourced from shops such as Primark or Peacocks (especially the kids section! It never disappoints!).
Whenever I prepare myself and my family for a photo session I find selecting clothes for the shoot an extra treat. Especially when I take my little girl with me and we have a girls day out together topped with ice cream and my favourite hazelnut cappuccino! It’s all a part of the process of creating stunning photos for our families. Photos that we will enjoy looking at, display and cherish for many years to come.
Let them be perfect!

I have used Ella's services twice now, once for a new born shoot and again for a sibling outdoor shoot for both my children. I'm so glad I chose Ella, she is professional and obviously loves her work! She works wonders with newborns, like a baby whisperer and managed to get my toddler to sit long enough to get some lovely images. The pictures I received on both occasions have been beautiful.
Ella's customer service and presentation of her work once complete is great and I would highly recommend her to others!
